[October 2, 2009]Chagas Disease in the Americas: Improving Access and Tools
for Patient Diagnosis and Treatment - Los Angeles, USAOn October 2, 2009, in Los Angeles, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders
(MSF), the Drugs for Neglected Diseases
initiative (DND
i), and the UCLA Program in
Global Health convened a one-day symposium on Chagas disease, bringing together
clinical researchers, drug developers, health professionals, policymakers, donors and
activists.
Conference participants agreed that there are urgent needs to scale up diagnosis and
treatments of the disease and increase research and development (R&D) for better
medical tools.

In 2009, on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Chagas disease, MSF and DND
i are working on several fronts to raise awareness about this neglected disease, to
increase access to care for patients, and to address the urgent need for new treatments.
