Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) is a collaborative, patients’ needs-driven, non-profit drug research and development (R&D) organization that is developing new treatments for Neglected Diseases (www.dndi.org). In the initial period of migration, DNDi will be seconding this position until GARDP is fully operational.

The Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (GARDP) is a not-for-profit research and development organization that addresses global public health needs by developing and delivering new or improved antibiotic treatments, while endeavoring to ensure sustainable access. Initiated and incubated through close collaboration between WHO and DNDi, GARDP is part of the implementation of the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance that calls for new public-private partnerships for encouraging research and development of new antimicrobial agents and diagnostics.(www.gardp.org)

GARDP’s mission is to work in partnership with the public and private sectors, to develop and deliver new treatments for bacterial infections where drug resistance is present or emerging, or for which inadequate treatment exists.

GARDP is currently hosted by DNDi, which provides the scientific environment, necessary personnel, and infrastructure to ensure an effective start-up phase. The GARDP Foundation has been created as a separate legal entity and a Communications Manager is now required to help promote GARDP.

 

Purpose of the position

The primary objective of the Communications Manager position is to help raise the profile of GARDP, its R&D portfolio, and position GARDP in the AMR landscape.

S/he will support the overall communications strategy by drafting content, liaising with media, and building GARDP’s digital presence across social media channels.

S/he will support stakeholder engagement, including mapping audiences, identifying and supporting delivery of opportunities for strategic engagement across key issues and external opportunities.

S/he will be a key member of the GARDP External Affairs team and working closely with colleagues across the organization.

 

Specific job responsibilities

With GARDP Senior Communications Manager and relevant Directors and Heads, deliver communication strategy for R&D programmes and across the organisation that builds recognition and demonstrates the value and difference GARDP makes, enhancing and protecting GARDP’s brand and reputation including:

  • Developing content, leveraging R&D milestones as news hooks, and building awareness of disease impact ensuring content is consistent, accurate, and timely
  • Undertaking multiple varied writing/editing tasks to support production of corporate publications including factsheets, programme brochures, annual report, programme updates, newsletters scripts for films and animations, op eds
  • Organizing field or partner visits for content collection, managing external vendors, timelines, and budgets
  • Supporting communication of results in scientific journals
  • Managing interactions with the media
  • Managing agencies to develop and implement PR plans in line with strategy
  • Ensuring GARDP messages and themes are regularly featured on social media channels in accordance with social media strategy
  • Providing council to teams in relation to media, reputation, and external environment
  • Ensuring all content adheres to GARDP guidelines in terms of consent, rights of use, logo use, and validation
  • Developing content and materials that directly supports fundraising efforts
  • Working closely with Policy Advocacy team to ensure GARDP is present, visible, and active in the political AMR space, and included in high level political discussions
  • Ensuring founding and ongoing role of DNDi and WHO is clearly and appropriately represented in communications outputs, work with founding partners to amplify messages and impact

Other tasks

  • Work closely with the Senior Communications Manager and Head of Development on other communications tasks including the development of the annual plan and budget

Experience

  • Minimum 6 years in similar position (with a background in journalism, communications management, media relations or global health) ideally with a strong public health background
  • Experience drafting text for web and social media, knowledge of all social platforms
  • Understanding of and commitment to global health, medical innovation, scientific research, and access to medicines issues
  • Knowledge of WordPress, Adobe Photoshop, photography, and video (also editing tools)
  • Experience in coordinating a network of collaborators
  • Portfolio of relevant work available
  • Experience working internationally and preferably with organization involved in global health issues
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and matrix structure

Education

  • Advanced postgraduate degree or graduate degree with equivalent in experience to reach Master level. Studies in communication, public health or science, or related area.

Other requirements

  • Excellent English mother tongue writing skills
  • Proficiency in local languages desirable
  • Very good knowledge of Microsoft Suite

 

Reporting line

  • S/he reports to the Head of Development, GARDP

Interactions

  • S/he works closely with the GARDP Senior Communications Manager, communications consultants and agencies, and with teams including Fundraising, Policy Advocacy, R&D, Finance & Administration, Legal, Business Development, and Regional Offices
