Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) is a collaborative, patients’ needs-driven, non-profit drug research and development (R&D) organization that is developing new treatments for Neglected Diseases (

The Operations Department was created in 2011 to help the Executive Director focus on strategic activities. It coordinates DNDi‘s infrastructure globally (finance, operational and strategic planning, human resources, information systems and technology, legal structuring, risk management and organisational development) and supports decision-making and flows of information across the organisation. It also provides oversight to business development and legal activities and liaison offices.


Purpose of the position

The Procurement Senior Manager defines the outsourcing strategy within DNDi/ Diseases Initiatives per R&D Action Plans in close collaboration with project leaders/disease leaders to ensure compliance with our Procurement Policy.

S/he creates and fosters long-term relationships with internal/external stakeholders to position Procurement function as a key business partner for R&D teams to deliver DNDi projects/programmes.


Specific job responsibilities


  • Be responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and managing the purchasing activities, policies and strategies for projects under her/his responsibilities
  • Lead the evaluation of competitive offerings to determine the overall best offer for a product or service. Implement best “value for money” and “total cost of ownership” approach for selection
  • Develop and implement outsourcing strategies and plans per disease and categories of expenditure. Identify outsourcing needs and build appropriate procurement yearly forecasts
  • Understand key cost drivers of various spend categories all along DNDi value chain (Discovery, Pre-clinical, Clinical, IT, Travels, etc.)
  • Manage all aspects of the strategic sourcing process (RFX): from industry analysis, needs identification, RFX creation, negotiation, contracting and monitoring of supplier’s performance
  • Strengthen suppliers relationship management
  • Implement continuous improvement tools and processes (templates, procurement data base and KPIs)
  • Establish supplier evaluation practices and metrics to monitor performance
  • Source new providers, identify new mechanisms to manage the increasing outsourcing demand
  • Support regional offices on procurement matters


  • Work in close collaboration with DNDi Procurement Sr Manager and Legal team
  • Build strong relationship with internal stakeholders (Finance, Fundraising…) to position Procurement function as a key business partner to deliver DNDi projects/programmes
  • Work with a team that consists of R&D “customers” but also Legal and Finance colleagues
  • Establish/Develop Procurement reputation as global expert and represent interests on cross-functional & global project teams
  • Cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders. Build and exhibit cross-functional influence skills across virtual and in-person teams across regions and culture


  • Ensure adherence to DNDi procurement policy
  • Comply with DNDi global policies and procedures (Procurement, Finance/Accounting, etc.)
  • Understand/implement donors’ requirements
  • Develop/strengthen procurement processes and systems in place (Source 2 Pay process)
  • Master governance and control procedures to protect company assets and enable/support trust of stakeholders (donors, auditors)
  • Manage risks, internal and external
  • Review and assist in revising procurement practices to ensure their conformance with established laws (regional offices)


Job requirements


  • Over 8 years in Senior role
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and matrix structure
  • Experience of working in pharmaceutical or Biotech companies
  • Excellent knowledge of Drug Discovery/Development
  • Excellent knowledge of Clinical Research/Development

  • Advanced post graduate degree or graduate degree with equivalent in experience to reach Master level

Other requirements

  • Fluency in English
  • Proficiency in local languages desirable
  • Very good knowledge of Microsoft Suite

  • S/he reports to the Business Development Director
